Iron rock of Pohjola, Northland

Both the Sun and Moon are hidden
In the rock of many colors,
In the copper-bearing mountain,
In a cavern iron-banded,
In the stone-berg of Pohjola.
Kalevala

The Iron Rock, also called Steely Mountain or Copper Mountain is situated in Pohjola, the Northland. It refers to the mountain as the center of the world that in the shamanistic tradition connects the lower and upper worlds. The Iron Mountain occurs in the banishing spells of diseases.

In Kalevala the mountain is called the Stone Hill (Kivimäki) of Pohjola. The Wizard of the North, Louhi, hides the magical machine Sampo deep inside the mountain.
